Restless Hearts
Have you ever noticed how even good things—success, relationships, comfort—never quite satisfy for long?
That isn’t because those things are bad. Rather, it is because we were made for more than what this world alone can provide. We’re created as both body and soul—and just as our bodies need daily care, so do our souls.
Indeed, we hunger for more than what this world can give. That deep longing isn’t random; it’s a sign of how God made us—to live in trust, hope, and love rooted in Him.
Christians understand this longing isn’t something we can satisfy by our own effort or by filling our lives with “good” things. We often try—but those things never quite reach the depth of our need.
Instead, God Himself comes to us.
He meets us not through our own efforts, but through the means He has given—His Word and promises—through which He creates and strengthens faith in us. “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).
In Christ, He satisfies what nothing else can.
Our restless hearts are given rest not by what we do, but by what He has already done—drawing us to Himself and holding us there.
When that longing returns—as it always does—it reveals again how easily we place our hope in things that cannot bear the weight of our deepest need.
It is a call to repentance—a reminder to turn from lesser things and trust the Lord, receiving again what He freely gives: restoration, grace, and forgiveness.
“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” – St. Augustine
